Setting Up your Outlook 2007 Mail Accounts

Here are instructions for setting up your e-mail account using Outlook 2007.

Please note that the specific step-by-step instructions will vary from e-mail client to e-mail client, however the basic settings are usually the same from client to client. Any time you are setting up an e-mail client, you will always need to know basic account information including your incoming (pop), and outgoing (smtp), server names, as well as your login information for each server.
These instructions will be different if you are using a different e-mail client such as Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Eudora, Mac Mail etc…

The first step is to make sure you have the following account information:
Incoming (POP) Server Name
Outgoing (SMTP) Server Name
Username
Password
Does my outgoing server require authentication (which means “does my outgoing server require logging in with a username and password”)

Usually if there are other special instructions needed for the account setup, your account provider will inform you or direct you to their Help section. To give you a general idea of configuring your e-mail account, we will use Outlook 2007 as an example.

Open Outlook 2007

If you haven’t set up this copy of Outlook on this computer before, you will see the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard. If this is the case, hit ‘Next’.

You will be brought to the ‘Account Configuration’ screen. Select ‘Yes’ to indicate that you want to configure an e-mail account, then click ‘Next’

If you do not automatically see the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard, go to the ‘Tools’ menu and click ‘Account Settings’ then click ‘New’.

On the ‘Auto Account Setup’ screen, complete the following fields:
Your Name: This will be how your name displays on ALL outbound e-mails from this account, so be sure to spell and capitalize properly
E-mail Address: This will be how your e-mail address displays on all outbound e-mails from this account. Type it exactly the way you want it to be displayed.
Password
Retype Password

At the bottom of the screen, check the box that reads ‘Manually configure server settings or additional sever types’ then click ‘Next’

Select ‘Internet E-mail’ and click ‘Next

On the ‘Internet E-mail Settings’ screen, complete the following fields:
Your Name: This will be how your name displays on ALL outbound e-mails from this account, so be sure to spell and capitalize properly
E-mail Address: This will be how your e-mail address displays on all outbound e-mails from this account. Type it exactly the way you want it to be displayed.
Account Type: Usually a POP3 unless your provider specifies otherwise
Incoming mail server: This is the name of your e-mail hosts server, also called a POP server
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): This is the name of your outbound server
User Name: This is the username for your account. This is often your e-mail address or the part before the @ symbol of your e-mail address
Password

If your e-mail host told you that your outgoing mail server requires authentication, click ‘More Settings’, then choose the ‘Outgoing Server’ tab. Check the box that reads ‘My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. If the login information is the same, select ‘Use same settings as my incoming mail server’. If your login information for that server is different, click ‘Log on using’ then input your username and password. Click ‘OK’.

If you want to test your settings, click ‘Test Account Settings…’. If you get errors, the first step is to check for typos. Verify all the info in all the fields you completed. If that doesn’t help, contact your e-mail provider for support.

Once you are satisfied with your setup, click ‘Next’, then ‘Finish’. Your Outlook 2007 setup is now complete.
